India’s star chess participant, D. Gukesh, hopes chess will get into the 2036 Olympics. He additionally spoke on his plan for 2025.
India’s star chess player and World Champion, D. Gukesh, believes that it would be a major boost for chess if it gets included in the Olympics 2036. On Thursday, D Gukesh was felicitated by the All India Chess Federation as he scripted history last month by becoming the youngest World Champion by beating China’s Ding Liren.
Gukesh on the idea of Chess in Olympics
D Gukesh thinks that it will be great for Chess to grow worldwide if it gets included in Olympics in near future. “I would love to see chess become a part of the Olympics, especially if it’s hosted in India. Chess is gaining a lot of popularity and support here, and the Olympics would elevate it to the next level. Yeah, really looking forward to it.” he said on the sidelines of the event.

Gukesh on his future
Gukesh also shared some insights on his future and how he is looking up in 2025. “It’s very important to keep playing, especially with the Tata Steel Masters coming up in a couple of days. There are so many exciting tournaments, and I’m really looking forward to them.” he said. Along with Tata Steel Chess, Freestyle Chess Grand Slam 2025 and Norway Chess 2025 will be the big events this year for Gukesh. “While it’s difficult to play in all tournaments, I’ll try to participate in as many as I can.” he added. The upcoming year promises to be an exciting one for Gukesh, with some tough opponents lined up. He will face his compatriot, Arjun Erigaisi, Norwegian Magnus Carlsen twice, and his idol, Vishwanathan Anand once.

During the felicitation, Gukesh said that he is honoured to receive this award. “I am so honored to receive this award. Being the second Indian chess player to get this recognition after Vishy Sir (Vishwanathan Anand) is very special”. he said.
